Saga of a Disc Golf Course Restructure - Part 5

Excited by the possibility of new holes, and even twenty one of them, we were eager to show the environmental committee around our proposed layout. Due to scheduling conflicts, members the committee had to come on two separate weekends. The first tour we gave went well, if a little on the wet side. We guided the members through most of the path we’d explored, trying to avoid the blackberries as much as possible. By and large, they seemed supportive of the layout, the only concern they posed was where the park’s property line stopped and private property began, and whether we were walking through somebody else’s property to get to the new holes.

The second tour, however, did not go as smoothly. In addition to the committee members that we were expecting, Robin, the environmental anti-disc golf lady, showed up to take the tour as well. Cue the ominous music (Darth Vader’s Imperial March would be a fitting piece). More on Saga of a Disc Golf Course Restructure - Part 5

Saga of a Disc Golf Course Restructure - Part 4

The next day, Aaron, Lowell, and I, as well as Gordy, another disc golfer whose been around for years, set out to explore new holes. We started on the east side of the road, where holes 1-3 are located. Looking around, we saw a way of installing at least five holes in the area, though that would make for crossing fairways and too much clutter in one section. Four holes looked feasible though. Satisfied with what we saw on the east side, we made the walk back across the road to scope out the as-yet-unexplored territory. For reference, if you look at the maps from Part 1 of the Saga, it’s the big patch of green to the north of 18, extending up to the area of 16’s tee. A large portion of the available territory isn’t visible on this map either.

As soon as we reached the area, we saw enormous potential. More on Saga of a Disc Golf Course Restructure - Part 4

Saga of a Disc Golf Course Restructure - Part 3

Learning that we needed to find yet an additional two replacement holes for the disc golf course, when after hours of searching, we’d only been able to find one suitable one, Aaron and I were feeling a bit overwhelmed. One of the additional holes was hole 4, the one open field shot of the course, which admittedly is a dangerous hole, since the field is often used by other people, including parents with small children. We also were being pressured to take out hole 9, largely because the green area of the hole was a steep slope that had eroded over the years. Apparently it used to have ferns growing on the hillside until some renegade golfer took it upon himself to weed whack all the ferns away. All I know is that by the time I started playing Terrace, the hillside was bare.

After we’d found out that the grand plan was to remove six holes, we didn’t hear much more news on the subject. Then one Saturday morning while I was lounging in pajamas and playing video games, I got a phone call from Aaron. He said that he’d just gotten a call from Lowell, and that he was meeting with Ken from the parks department in about half an hour. It should be noted that Lowell is chronically bad about communicating important news ahead of time. So, shaken out of my comfortable relaxation, I pulled on some clothes and headed north to meet with Aaron, Lowell, and Ken. More on Saga of a Disc Golf Course Restructure - Part 3

Saga of a Disc Golf Course Restructure - Part 2

Before I continue, I should probably provide a cast of characters of those involved.

First of all, me: Tim. As I stated previously, I’ve only been playing Terrace Creek for a little more than 2 years, but being the disc golf addict that I am, I’m usually out there at least 3-4 days of the week, if not more. In my eyes, its a good disc golf course with great potential, and in comparison to other courses in the area, it could use some much needed TLC.

Aaron: One of my good discing buddies that I met from playing many rounds at the course. He’s probably done more for the day to day maintenance of the course than anyone else. The city provides almost no support to the course, other than an occasional, uneven mowing. If there’s a trashcan that’s emptied or litter that’s been picked up, there’s a good chance Aaron was involved.

The Saga of a Disc Golf Course Restructure - Part 1

Ever have one of those great ideas that would have been much better had you thought of them several months previous? Well, that is what has happened here. My current home course, Terrace Creek, in Mountlake Terrace, WA, is undergoing some changes, and it would have been great for me to give a play by play as the changes happen. As it is though, inspiration has come a bit late, so I’ll do the best I can to recreate the events leading up to the present. OK, from the beginning….
