Disc Dyeing 102: Some New Pointers

After getting some good feedback from our first disc dyeing tutorial, Chuck and I got together to do another one for everybody out there. Probably the foremost request we had was people asking about the cutting process, so we included that here in Part I of the videos. Parts 2 and 3 cover largely the same stuff we did in the first videos, but there are a few details we tried to touch on a bit more this time around. So if you want to learn about cutting the vinyl, see us do the dipping process again, or just want to watch us dork out with our spork out, check out the videos below:

Get Heard and Expand Disc Golf in “The Horse Capital”

At AADG we are trying to bring disc golfers together through our community, and increase public awareness and respect for the sport. Although it is taking longer than we would like to get the actual site up and running, we now have about 280 unique visitors a month.

We both understand that leaving comments on blogs isn’t exactly the most exciting thing to do, and that forums are a much better place to talk about disc golf (and we are working on a forum) SO, with that in mind, there is a way to have your voice heard.

I just read an article out of the Lexington Kentucky newspaper online, about a recent meeting regarding expansion of activities in their parks. There was barely a mention of disc golf and the one line that was in the article was this “Other suggestions at Monday night’s meeting included expanding opportunities for disc golf and retaining Meadowbrook Golf Course, the city’s only 18-hole, par-3 golf course, ideal for beginners and seniors.” Ok, so it wasn’t even a full sentence, they quickly changed the subject to ball golf.

Getting to the point, the director of parks, Jerry Hancock is looking for the public’s voice on this matter. Soooo, this is a great opportunity for our readers, no matter where you live, to send Jerry Hancock a little email, a letter, or give him a call and cast your vote to expand and create other courses around the city. There are currently 3 disc golf courses in the city according to DG Course Review. This is better than some cities but if the parks are looking to expand activities, disc golf is always a great way to go. You can find out more about Jerry including how to contact him here : http://www.lfucg.com/parks/director.asp

I’m going to write him and let him know what we are doing with the AADG and that we would support him expanding the disc golf presence in Lexington (which is the 2nd largest city in the state). We will let him know about the rapid growth of this sport and the draw it will have in his area in the coming months and years. I know that most disc golfers look for new courses to play whenever they travel, so this is something else to consider about drawing tourists into the park system.

If you want to speak out as an advocate for disc golf, this is a great way to start, and it will only take a minute to get it done.

Thanks to everyone who has been visiting our site and wishing us well. Look for good things to come.
Oh, if you want to read the entire article about the parks plans to expand, click here.

Even Audubon Members Want To Save The Disc Golf Course

If you’ve been keeping up with Tim’s exhaustive battle to save the Mountlake Terrace Disc Golf Course from being either drastically reduced or totally eliminated, there seems to be a bit of good news. A former Audubon member and Mountlake Terrace resident has responded to the Mountlake Terrace Enterprise Newspaper article which detailed the banning of disc golf at the park. See the article here

If this former Audubon member can be reached, Tim may have a very valuable partner in saving this course. Since the Audubon is one of the most well known and respected environmental organizations in the country, having his testimonial about having lived in the area and frequented the park for 5 years (and not seeing any noticeable impact on the environment) may prove very powerful.

If you are in Seattle or nearby, get connected to help save this course. Tim is working hard but there are definitely strength in numbers. Get up with Tim or leave a comment on the blog if you want to help get involved. Thanks!

Technical Challenges of Creating AADG

As with the launch of any new project of large proportion, the creation  of The Association for the Advancement of Disc Golf has not been without it’s challenges.  We are still very early in the game, and between the two of us, Tim and I have some really great ideas about uniting disc golfers from around the country and using the collective consciousness to aid the evolution of disc golf.

Among the challenges we face are the technical challenges in creating a website especially for our AADG members.  Our vision is a fully integrated, member supported, technologically advanced and well rounded site where members and non-members can collaborate and exchange ideas, keep up with the latest news and events, and really be part of the growth of not only AADG, but the sport of disc golf.

In the coming months look for this site to progress and evolve, hopefully with the feedback of readers like you.  Please let us know what you would like to see and read about.
