Pay To Play vs. Free

Today, as I do every Thursday, I went to my local course to play 9 holes before dark. It’s something I look forward to every week after a long day at “my real job”. Only lately, when I have gone, I’ve found myself secretly wishing for a pay to play course close by. I’m definitely all for the free courses too, but having to step over other people’s trash (and even found a gatorade bottle IN one of the baskets) I long for a course where everyone respects the game and their surroundings.

A couple of weeks ago, I went with a friend of mine to a course close by in a public park, and as my friend Jason threw his fairway driver on hole 2 (a great shot that looked like it was going right for the basket) some guy ran up and tried to catch his disc! Then went over to where it was and picked it up and threw it back to him! Talk about a lie… man. Needless to say we were both pretty unsettled by this, but what do you do. It’s obvious the teenager had no clue what disc golf was, nor did he realize anything about course, etiquette.

I realize that there are a lot of people that are dead set against having pay to play courses, and who are opposed to those in existence now, but i say, if the pay to play courses can co-exist with the free ones, I’m all for paying to play a round.

As always, I welcome other opinions and stories.
